Antique brooch in the shape of a captivating crescent moon. The sky has long been a source of fascination and inspiration for humans, and the popularity of celestial-themed pieces has not waned over the years. Twenty-one carefully-chosen diamonds of graduating size, totaling 1.10 cts in weight, are set in platinum in characteristic early 20th century style, with a 14k rose gold backing.

This brooch is a stunning example of the sort of craftsmanship that is rare today. These diamonds are old European cut: the successor to old mine cuts, with more refined technique and rounder, more symmetric shape, meticulously hand-cut as machines for stone cutting was not yet available. Eventually, the old European cut would evolve into the modern brilliant cut; however, there's a special charm in these slightly imperfect old diamonds, and the uniquely beautiful fire they display. The side of the brooch features a decorative openwork pattern, a detail so subtle it may not be noticed by others, but shows the masterful skill and meticulous work of the jeweler.

Diamonds est. 1.10 cts, G-H color, VS-SI clarity.

Estimated from 1910-20s.

Size: 2 1/4" long (from tip to tip) x approx. 1/4" width.

Marked (faintly), tested 14k. In very good antique condition. The smallest diamond on one end has been replaced.

All jewelry is cleaned before being sent to customers.

FAQs

What is gold karat level?

You'll see in all our descriptions a number and then "k" (ex. 14k, 17k, 12k). This indicates the purity level of the gold in the piece, which is the ratio of other metals to gold in the piece. Pure gold, which is not often used in jewelry because it is softer, is 24k. 14k (which is the most common in the U.S.) is 14 parts gold to 10 parts other metals, making up a total of 24 parts. The purity level is also sometimes conveyed as a percentage (ex. 375, 585, 750).

What does estate/vintage/antique mean?

Vintage refers to pieces that are over 20 years old, while antique refers to pieces over 100 years old. We use "estate" to refer to pre-owned pieces that are less than 20 years old or ones we can't determine an exact age for. Vintage and antique pieces can have imperfections or scratches from being owned and worn before. We do our best to document and make clear any imperfections in our photos and listings, and please ask questions before purchasing if there's anything you are unsure about! Product colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings, and all measurements are approximate.
