An antique Art Nouveau medallion, depicting Mother Mary, with a halo of shimmering rose cut diamonds, and original diamond bail. Framed with intricate floral plique-à-jour enamel work in shades of blue, an enamel technique with no metal backing, allowing the light to shine through like a miniature stained glass window.

Plique-à-jour is a challenging, time-consuming technique, originally developed in the ancient Byzantine empire but revived in the late 1800s. It became a signature of Art Nouveau style, as the translucency of the enamel could be used to create lifelike leaves, petals, and insect wings.

Signed E. Dropsy for Émile Dropsy, (1848-1923) a French engraver, known for his work inspired by religious figures and nature.

Marked with an eagle's head, the French mark for 18k gold, tested to verify. In good antique condition, some enamel wear.

Weight: 9.34 g

Size: 30 mm / approx. 1.25" diameter

Chains sold separately.

All jewelry is thoroughly cleaned before being sent to customers.

FAQs

What is gold karat level?

All our descriptions include the purity level of the gold in the piece, which is the ratio of other metals to gold. Pure gold, which is not often used in jewelry because it is softer, is 24k. 14k (which is the most common in the U.S.) is 14 parts gold to 10 parts other metals, making up a total of 24 parts. The purity level is also sometimes conveyed as a percentage, ex. 375 (9k), 585 (14k), 750 (18k).

What does estate/vintage/antique mean?

Vintage refers to pieces that are over 20 years old, while antique refers to pieces over 100 years old. We use "estate" to refer to pre-owned pieces that are less than 20 years old or ones we can't determine an exact age for. Vintage and antique pieces can have imperfections or scratches from being owned and worn before. We do our best to document and make clear any imperfections in our photos and listings, and please ask questions before purchasing if there's anything you are unsure about! Product colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings, and all measurements are approximate.
