Over its 90-year history, the Calatrava has earned its mark as Patek Philippe's "quintessential round watch", becoming one of the brand's most recognizable timepieces. This particular reference merges the minimalist purity of the original 1932 Bauhaus-inspired design with proportion and delicate details that make for a terrific unisex dress watch. 

The Calatrava draws its primary inspiration from the early 20th-century Officer’s Watches. Originally commissioned for military officers who required watches with hinged casebacks to protect the watch's movement in the field, Patek Philippe reimagined this utility as a signature of haute watch craftsmanship. With a lift of the hinged caseback, a transparent sapphire crystal is revealed, offering an intimate view of this watch's 30-jewel, caliber 315 SC movement.

Introduced in 2001 and produced until the mid-2000s, this short-lived 5053R-001 reference is defined by its silver-toned dial adorned with Breguet Arabic numerals and signature "pomme" hands. The Breguet numerals are a special feature reserved for special Patek Philippe timepieces typically with limited production numbers.
